摘要(英文): The practice of shared reading in language classrooms is getting more attention in Taiwan. This study intended to implement shared reading in two elementary English classes for one semester to observe how students’ learning was affected by this practice. Furthermore, the concept of graded books was applied to select the reading materials for the study. Twelve 40 minute sessions of shared reading were administered to two classes (one fifth and one fourth grad) in an urban area of southern Taiwan. Each student was pre- and post-tested for reading proficiency in terms of reading fluency, ability in word/sentence recognition, and reading comprehension. In addition, student questionnaires and teacher interviews were conducted to collect qualitative data. A research assistant was present in every class to observe and collect data for further analyses. The results of the study indicated that students significantly improved their ability in all three aspects of reading proficiency after the shared reading sessions. Furthermore, they increased their learning enjoyment and classroom participation.
